In 2011, six homeschooling families met to discuss how they could support each other in an inclusive environment where everyone was welcome. The families shared a vision of a close knit community where members would explore the world together, make friends, and have classes, field trips, and other adventures.
They especially wanted to create an environment where the children's voices would be valued. The children would provide input on what they would learn. Adults, too, had a voice. Everyone would share their skills and interests.
In 2012 they founded Great Explorers Co-op, offering member-taught classes and social meetups in and around Milford, Massachusetts. Over the years programs and traditions took root and expanded to include holidays, birthday celebrations, summer outings, camping trips, field trips, and more.
Many friendships and memories have been made through GECO. Many families have contributed to the growth and development of the culture, traditions, innovation, and robust offerings that characterize GECO today.
During COVID-19, we met remotely for one year, continuing our weekly community gathering online via zoom (joke-tellers and all) ,and trying out new models for connection, including outdoor nature studies, hiking groups, online writing and geography clubs, and online classes and game nights. By the time we began meeting together in person we had "unlearned" a lot about what classes and events "had" to look like and had a new appreciation the power of shared experiences.
We had a chance to meet and welcome families new to homeschooling as well as veterans. Eventually we found our footing, a core membership, and a new meeting location in Marlborough. We are thrilled to be able to learn, play, celebrate, and explore together.
The co-op is now in its 11th year, with 19 families and 51 learners. We look forward to continuing to welcome new members, improve the quality and outreach of our programs, and embark on new adventures.
